MITS 2025 & BES Industry Day Recap

This week, two members of our Sales team—Geronimo Moreno and Hope Skibitsky—traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to attend two of the most impactful events in the DoD IT calendar: the AFCEA Montgomery IT Summit (MITS) and the BES Industry Day. These gatherings aren't just another stop on the federal conference circuit—they're where acquisition, technology, and mission priorities converge.

And this year, there was one unmistakable throughline: AI is no longer an emerging concept—it’s operational.

Generative AI and the Future of Contracting

One of the most compelling sessions came from Lt. Connor Bright, who shared how his acquisition team is actively integrating Generative AI into the contract award process.

Traditionally, much of contracting involves reviewing repetitive documentation, formatting proposals, and conducting compliance checks—tasks that are necessary but often time-consuming. By using GenAI tools to automate these low-complexity, high-frequency actions, his team is reclaiming hours each week. That saved time is now redirected toward more strategic efforts: refining acquisition strategies, engaging stakeholders earlier, and ultimately delivering capability faster.

This is a powerful signal for anyone in the GovCon space. If you’re preparing proposals, managing task orders, or leading delivery teams, now’s the time to ask: How could AI streamline your internal processes—without sacrificing accuracy or compliance?

BES Industry Day: Listening Before Leading

At PEO BES Industry Day, we heard from program leaders who weren’t just outlining requirements—they were encouraging dialogue. The discussions focused on clarity, collaboration, and shared accountability between government and industry.

For small and mid-sized businesses, this kind of transparency is critical. It helps level the playing field and gives companies the insight they need to build realistic, compliant, and competitive solutions. BES leadership emphasized early engagement, giving attendees a clearer sense of what’s coming, what matters most, and where innovation is most needed.

    Local Momentum, National Impact

Rounding out the trip, we had the opportunity to attend a Montgomery Chamber of Commerce event that highlighted the vital role local small businesses play in the federal ecosystem. These businesses aren’t just subcontractors—they’re creators, integrators, and sometimes the very first adopters of tools and talent that scale across larger programs.

The event served as a reminder that innovation doesn’t just come from big firms or national labs—it often starts with a team of ten in a small shop doing focused, mission-critical work that grows into something much bigger.

    Final Thoughts

Events like MITS and BES Industry Day are more than just an opportunity to network—they’re a temperature check on what’s happening right now across the defense IT and acquisition community. And this year, the message was loud and clear:

    • AI is becoming embedded in acquisition strategy

    • Government leaders are asking the right questions—and open to real answers

    • Small businesses have a bigger seat at the table than ever before

If you missed the event, don’t worry—we put together a quick video recap where Geronimo shares highlights and reflections straight from Montgomery. Whether you're leading proposals or managing delivery, there's something in it for you.

Inside the 2025 NHOA Small Business Summit

We just returned from the 2025 Native Hawaiian Organization Association (NHOA) Small Business Summit in Hawaii—and it was one of the most insightful, energizing events we’ve attended this year. Over the course of three days, the summit brought together Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs), small business leaders, federal agencies, and industry experts to talk shop, build connections, and share strategies for thriving in the federal marketplace.

But unlike most conferences, this one didn’t just deliver updates—it delivered clarity.

A Deep Dive Into the NHO Model

If you’re not already familiar with NHOs, here’s the quick version: NHOs are nonprofits led by Native Hawaiians that support their communities through business success. Each NHO owns one or more for-profit companies that compete for federal contracts. These companies don’t just generate revenue—they help fund initiatives like education, health care, and cultural preservation.

The model itself is powerful—but the summit helps you understand why it works so well. Attendees explored how NHOs leverage key advantages like:

    • Sole-source authority under the SBA 8(a) program

    • The ability to establish multiple subsidiaries under one NHO

    • A mission-driven approach to performance and accountability

Key Highlights from the 2025 Summit

This year’s summit wasn’t just educational—it was dynamic and full of standout moments:

An Exclusive Kickoff at Waialae Country Club

Our team was honored to attend an invite-only golf outing at the private Waialae Country Club on Day 1. Surrounded by leaders from the SBA and Entity-owned small businesses, it was a day of meaningful conversation, genuine fellowship, and lasting connections in a relaxed but focused setting.

Actionable Sessions on GovCon Law and Policy

One of the most impactful breakout sessions was Small Business Affiliation Issues and Updates, presented by Ian Patterson of the Schoonover Law Firm. These kinds of sessions help small businesses stay current on compliance and legal risks—key to maintaining eligibility and competitiveness in the 8(a) space.

    Notable Voices from SBA Leadership

Hearing directly from John Klein, Deputy General Counsel and Associate General Counsel for Procurement Law at the SBA, was a rare opportunity. His insights on regulatory shifts and SBA priorities added essential context for both new and experienced GovCon players.

Moments That Remind Us Why We’re Here

One of our favorite memories? Seeing our own Keone Peneku reconnect with the “super OG… triple OG” Phil Kahue. As a former executive at Alakaina, Phil helped scale it into one of the largest NHOs in the country—and now leads his own consulting firm. Encounters like this one underscore the legacy, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing that set this community apart.

    Why Events Like This Matter

The NHOA Small Business Summit isn’t just another industry gathering. It’s a space where strategy, compliance, policy, and purpose all come together. You walk away not just better informed, but more committed to building a business that delivers both high performance and high impact.

For federal acquisition professionals and small business partners alike, this event offers a front-row seat to one of the most effective—and still misunderstood—models in government contracting.

If you missed the 2025 summit, we strongly recommend putting next year’s on your calendar now. Because NHOs aren’t just about contracts. They’re about kuleana. They’re about legacy. And they’re building something that lasts.

Employee Spotlight: Monica Reed, Portfolio Manager, Finance & Compliance

At NTI, we recognize that our success is built on the dedication and expertise of our team members. With a career spanning multiple industries, a deep commitment to transparency, and a passion for mentorship, we’re excited to highlight Monica Reed, our Finance & Compliance Portfolio Manager. Monica plays a critical role in ensuring NTI remains financially sound and compliant with government regulations.

A Journey Through Numbers and Compliance

Monica’s career in accounting has taken her through various industries, from construction and oil to private security and communications. Yet, it was government contracting that ultimately drew her in. After initially stepping away from the field, she found her way back and has since made a lasting impact at NTI.

As the Finance & Compliance Portfolio Manager, Monica oversees NTI’s financial operations and ensures that we meet all regulatory requirements. Her work is instrumental in maintaining the trust of our customers and stakeholders, a responsibility she takes seriously. “Transparency is very important to me,” Monica shares. “If you start hiding information, people stop trusting you. In accounting, trust is everything.”

A Culture of Growth and Opportunity

Monica was drawn to NTI’s leadership philosophy, which emphasizes personal and professional growth alongside company success. “If the company is growing, you’re growing with it," she says. "You have the opportunity to advance, stay where you are, or even shift your career path. NTI truly supports that.”

This emphasis on development aligns perfectly with Monica’s lifelong dedication to learning. She believes education—whether formal or informal—is a continuous journey. In fact, she’s preparing to pursue her MBA, a decision fueled by NTI’s commitment to supporting employee education. “The fact that our company provides educational programs is huge. Learning should never stop.”

    Leading by Example

Beyond her work in finance and compliance, Monica has a strong passion for mentorship and community service. Early in her career, she worked on a program that helped migrant families integrate into the community, teaching parents essential skills and connecting them with vital resources. “I’ve always believed in helping people get to where they want to be faster,” she explains. “If I can share my experiences to help someone else, I will.”

This nurturing spirit extends to her home life, where she enjoys bonding with her daughter through shared books, morning walks, and their favorite pastime—belting out Hamilton lyrics to playfully annoy her husband. “We’ll sing anything, even George Strait if we have to,” she laughs.

    Bringing Joy to NTI

Monica’s enthusiasm extends beyond her day-to-day responsibilities. She has a talent for event planning and played a key role in organizing NTI’s recent Christmas party. “I love taking a theme and running with it,” she says. “I hope our teammates enjoyed it as much as we did planning it.”

    A Lasting Impact

Monica’s influence at NTI goes far beyond numbers and regulations. Her dedication to integrity, mentorship, and lifelong learning makes her an invaluable part of our team. Whether she’s ensuring compliance, guiding a colleague, or planning a company celebration, she approaches it all with passion and purpose.

Monica, thank you for your hard work and commitment to NTI’s mission. We’re excited to see what you accomplish next!

    Employee Spotlight: Hope Skibitsky

At NTI, our strength lies in our people, and no one understands that better than Hope Skibitsky, our Chief Growth Officer, formerly our Chief People Empowerment Officer. With a passion for fostering a thriving workplace and a deep belief in NTI’s core values, Hope ensures that every team member has the support and resources they need to succeed.

A Passion for People & Core Values

Hope’s experience in both human resources and the military has strengthened her commitment to core values. Among NTI’s guiding principles, the one that resonates most with her is:

“Be or Seek the Authoritative Source.”

To Hope, this means always verifying what we know, striving for the truth, and continuously improving.

The Power of Teamwork at NTI

What Hope loves most about NTI is the diversity of its team—different backgrounds, personalities, and skill sets coming together. She values how the NTI family leans on each other, celebrates wins, and supports one another through challenges. “When it’s time to work, we work. But when it’s time to take care of one of our own, we do that too,” she says.

    Life Outside of Work

When she’s not empowering NTI employees, Hope enjoys life with her husband and their first-ever dog—a hairless pup that requires sunscreen, lotion, and even mosquito repellent! She also loves audiobooks, from professional development reads to thrilling murder mysteries, and helping her husband bring his agricultural dreams to life.
