Honolulu, HI. The Hawaii district SBA office recently held a Listening Session and we were fortunate enough to come away with some exciting updates for Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs) and small businesses. The SBA is making changes to the HUBZone program, aiming to simplify the rules and make it easier for businesses in underserved areas to qualify for contracts. This is great news for those of us looking to expand opportunities in our local communities.
The session also covered changes to the 8(a) Business Development program, particularly around size and recertification requirements. These updates will help clarify some of the more confusing policies and make it smoother for NHOs to stay compliant. Another hot topic was the Mentor-Protégé Program, where the SBA discussed balancing opportunities between joint ventures and smaller businesses, making sure everyone has a fair shot at winning contracts.
Lastly, there was a focus on Executive Order 14112, which is all about increasing accessibility and flexibility for NHOs when it comes to federal funding and support. The SBA is exploring ways to ease personal guarantee requirements and address sovereign immunity challenges for tribal-owned businesses. Overall, the session was full of useful insights, and we’re excited to see how these changes will help our community grow.
